Good quality strainer
I just got this strainer, and I am very happy with how it feels. The steel strainer portion has solid wiring that feels very sturdy. Unless you’re picking up something very heavy with this, you shouldn’t have any problems with using it. The handle is also very solid and hefty-feeling, so it feels like quality. It *IS* quite large, such that it may not fit in drawers very easily. So if you don’t think you’ll need a substantial one, the 5 inch size might be fine for you. However, this guy is barely any more money than its 5 inch counterpart, and I didn’t want to regret it and buy the small one and find out that the bigger one might have been a better idea to get. Just whip out a ruler and get an idea of the difference between 5 and 7 inches to make the determination for yourself.

My wife loves me for this!
At 69 years (46 of them with me), heaving a full and boiling pasta pot to the sink to empty into a colander was becoming difficult, if not dangerous for my wife. Much as I love her cooking, I hated the fear I experienced watching her. Suggesting that I might help did NOT go down too well, either. Saw this on a cooking show one day and searched and ordered it for a holiday gift. But when it arrived, it looked just too “durable” for a real “gift”, so I turned it over to her on the spot. No more fears of scalds or spills. This thing is great. The mesh is good for just about any pasta, but it is certainly not a sieve. Remember though that starch makes a great glue, so do not let it go dry with any residue on it, unless you want to spend some time humming at the sink while you clean it. The bamboo is heavy and shows no sign of deterioration in about month of frequent use. Pretty it’s not, but function is prime, and durability seems excellent.

Amazing Quality, But…
…the 7-inch version is comically large for my small apartment. For people in starter apartments/people who are cooking for 1-2 people usually, buy the 5-inch version! I had no frame of reference and, being 7 feet tall myself, I figured an equally large strainer would be worth while. Wrong! It works, dont get me wrong, but the 5-inch version is definitely for smaller amounts. As for the product itself – 5 star quality, build. Looks great, works great, and a great price. A must-buy if there ever was one!

A nice strainer
No surprises, it looks on unpacking pretty much as it looks in the pictures. The handle is raw bamboo, so I had to treat it with mineral oil before using. I like that the basket is shallow; this makes it easy to remove frying “nuggets” (like pork or chicken) from the wok. The basket was bent during shipping, but it is flexible and was relatively easy to bend back into shape. I don’t blame this on the manufacturer, it’s the shipper’s fault.I wouldn’t recommend this only because it’s part of the “Joyce Chen” line. If you read my review of the item “Joyce Chen 33-2029, Burnished Bamboo 5-Piece Utensil Set”, you will understand why.

Works well, but protruding wires shred sponges and towels
As others have said, strainers with wide mesh like this drain boiled and fried items better than typical screen-type strainers. Surface tension of water and oils get carried along easier with finer mesh. This strainer allows you to tap off excess water/oil easily and will drip less than slotted spoons or fine mesh.My problem is that the ends of the wires wrapped around the outer ring stick out and were not wrapped flush. I discovered this by trying to hand wash the strainer – it shredded the sponge I used. Forget about wiping dry with a towel as it’ll be snagged by the wires. The only practical way to hand wash is to swish in soapy water and air dry.I spent a few minutes with a needle nose pliers in an attempt to bend the ends around so they don’t snag so readily, but it still is a problem. I guess this strainer will be ‘dishwasher only’ for me.O.K. for the price, but be aware of the wires…

not at all like the shape shown in the picture – flat and straight
not at all like the shape shown in the picture.Mine arrived flattened out. very hard to use, I was looking for a dish shaped and angled related to the handle to scoop out things from a pot, but with it flat and straight it is useless
